Information for Entering Digital Images in Competitions

How to Create a JPEG File Using Adobe Photoshop

Resizing Your Image

All digital images will be judged at a resolution of 1400px by 1050px.
1400 is the width across, making your image a landscape format.
Firstly, you should resize your image to fit within that pixel area. You will probably want to maintain the proportions of your image, so you may choose to add a background colour to fill any remaining space.

1. From the Image Menu, choose Image Size.
2. Make sure the units you have selected are pixels (top centre of the box).
3. Enter the width you want, for example 1400 Constrain Proportion.
4. The height will adjust automatically providing you have the box ticked
5. Finally check the height. If the height is more than 1050 then you need to enter 1050 in the height-this will reduce the width to less than 1400 pixels. Click O.K.
Tip: many people will talk about ‘file size’ or ‘dpi’ - none of this is relevant here, you are measuring pixels only.

Adding a Background

1. If your image is not exactly 1400px by 1050 px then it will be judged with a black background filling the remaining space. If you want to choose some colour other than black then you can do so.
2. Set the background colour on the colour palette to the colour you want.
From the Image Menu, choose Canvas Size. The Canvas Size dialog box is shown. Make sure the units are set to pixels. Type in 1400px for the width and 1050 px for the height. Click O.K.
3. Your image canvas is now enlarged to show the picture and the spare margins around the outside.

Saving the Image

1 To save a file as a JPEG file, from the File Menu, choose Save As. The Save As dialog is displayed.
2 Select the folder you want to save to and type in the correct title which should be no longer than 30 characters including spaces .Next make sure the Format field is set to JPEG.
3 Click the save button, you will then see the JPEG Options dialog box.
4 Set the amount of compression to apply to the image. You can set the quality to 12. This will ensure the final file size is not too large but will retain the quality of the image. Make sure the Format Options is set to Baseline (‘Standard’). Click O.K.
N.B.
When saving your images on a C.D. Do NOT use a rewrite (RW) CD. Do NOT put any sticky labels on the disc. Write on the CD with a pen. Put on your name, membership number and titles of the images
eg 1001 The Old Tree for image 1 member no 1 and the image title {no more than 30 characters in length}
2001 Lucky Day for image 2 , member no1 and the image title
For digital theme entries please number these as 1001 Bubbles for image 1, member 1 and theme title.

NB membership numbers need to be expressed as a 3 digit number so that the program used for projection can recognise indiviual members.

Internal Competitions

A) Print /Digital Image Competition

All photographs to have been taken at either Martin Mere, Leyland Motor Museum or on a club practical night. There will also be a section for panels of three images on the theme of ‘My Special Day’ which can be taken anywhere during the season.

C) Digital A V Competition

Any member may enter a digital AV. There will be a maximum of 10 minutes per person.

All entries will be judged by the members.
Any queries to the competition secretary.

St. Catherine’s Hospice Competition

For many years Leyland Photographic Society has supported St. Catherine’s Hospice by providing photographs taken by members for illustration of their annual calendar. The subject matter is determined by the requirements of the management committee of the Hospice.

Please take photographs throughout the season anywhere in the South Ribble Area. Pictures should, preferably, be submitted on CD. These go to the management committee of St. Catherine’s Hospice and this committee selects which images will be used for the next year’s calendar.

The same images may also be entered into a competition at the club which will be judged by the members on the first night of next season.

Any queries - please see Gary Poole LRPS.

External Competitions

Leyland PS takes part in inter-club competitions. These competitions enable members to show their work to a much wider audience and to compare standards both regionally and nationally.

The External Competition Secretary will complete the necessary entry forms, but will require a broad selection of material from members in order to assemble a club entry.

In April every season members will be asked to submit work for the L&CPU and ICPA competitions. The simplest way to enter is to hand in your best work from the previous LPS Annual Exhibition.

ICPA Annual Competition

This is an inter-club competition open to all member clubs of the ICPA (Inter-Club Photographic Alliance). The club’s entry is selected by the club although individual authors are invited to submit their choice of images for selection.

Leyland Invitation Exhibition

This annual event is organised by Leyland Photographic Society and is sponsored by Wilkinson Cameras. Entries are invited from members of the following camera clubs and photographic societies:-
Blackburn and District C.C., Chorley P.S., Leyland P.S., Preston P.S., Ribblesdale C.C., Southport P.S., and Wigan P.S.
The accepted entries are displayed at the South Ribble Museum and Art Gallery during December.

3-Way Battle

This annual competition takes place between Chorley P.S., Leyland P.S. and Preston P.S. The event is hosted by each club in rotation.
The judge and the date are chosen by the host club.

L&CPU Annual Competition

All affiliated clubs and societies are invited to submit prints, slides and digital images. Images entered are the choice of the individual author, not the club. However, awards are made both to clubs and to individuals. The selected images are displayed at the L&CPU annual exhibition and are made available to clubs and societies as travelling portfolios. Images which score highly may be used to represent the L&CPU in the annual PAGB inter-federation competitions.

The judges for this competition are all accredited judges of national and international reputation.

See also www.lcpu.org for full details of rules, competitions and dates for entry.

Further information and entry forms are made available via the club’s secretary and/or external competition secretary.

Oldham Inter-club Monochrome Competition

This inter-club competition is by invitation and is usually supported by about 10 clubs and societies. The Leyland P.S. entry is selected in the same manner as the ICPA competition.
